Glycine SST Chronograph 24 hour dial 43mm Blue White Orange Dial Valjoux 724Glycine
For auction is a 1969 Glycine SST 24 hour dial Valjoux 724 43mm steel GMT blue and orange extremely rare 100 pieces made manual winding chronograph. There is rare, and then there is RARE. This is RARE. Understanding the importance of this watch requires some understanding about EPSA. Ervin Picquerez S.A. (EPSA) was arguably the greatest vintage sport watch maker ever (at least I will argue this): they made many millions of watches and advanced sport watch technology greatly. They invented the Super-Compressor case and that diver helmet logo on the inner caseback is the logo of EPSA (insofar as EPSA had a logo). The company is long gone now, a victim to the Quartz Crisis, but the legacy remains strong. It is a worthy topic of research and any person interested in vintage watches should really know about the breadth and reach of the EPSA brand. Now about this Glycine: it is undoubtedly one of the most special watches EPSA ever produced. It was made for customers who would fly on the Boeing 2707 SST, ultimately a doomed project which never took flight (for a variety of reasons: cost, environmental impact). The Glycine SST was made in 100 pieces and launched at the exact same time as automatic chronographs first hit the market. As such it went quietly into obscurity and holy grail status among collectors. It is both the most rare and most valuable Glycine and probably a top 5 watch that EPSA ever made. It has an incredible color scheme: dark blue dial, white subdials and blaze orange 24 hour chapter. Truly made for the jet setter it is the only 24 hour dial EPSA chronograph ever to be made. This particular watch is in a nice original worn and never polished condition; dial is still vibrant and excellent and the original sunburst brushing is very good. The opportunity to buy the watch is rare, they don't frequently come around and those that have them generally are unwilling to part with them.
