Frey Supercompressor 42MM EPSA Stainless Steel Vintage Diver Broad Arrow 1961Frey
For auction is a Frey Plongeurs automatic diving watch. This watch is a 42mm Super Compressor. Super Compressors were a category of diving watch, invented by case manufacturer Ervin Piquerez SA (EPSA). They featured a screw back with a tension spring that would tighten the back as the watch experienced greater pressure underwater. Many Super Compressors also featured a design with two crowns, where the top is used to adjust an internal diver bezel. This design was the first time that the dive watch had been redesigned since the external dive bezel came out in 1954. This Frey is the earliest and most desirable 42mm version with long tapering lugs. The back has a brevet (patent) number that would suggest that it is from 1960 or '61. It is in unpolished condition with some patina on the case, some minor crazing on the super dome acrylic crystal and some light spotting on the dial. We love the level of patina on this watch, as it suggests that it was used for its intended purpose.
Diameter: 42 mm w/out crown, 44 mm w/crown, 52 mm lug to lug
Lug Width: 22 mm at the lugs tapering to 18 mm (will take a 22 mm strap)
Height: 13 mm
Power-reserve: 38 hours
Water Resistance: N/A
Gram Weight: 66 grams
Movement: A. Schild caliber 1700 automatic 25 jewels
Case: Unpolished STAINLESS STEEL 42mm case with long tapering lugs and a massive screw back that was designed to get tighter under pressure. Caseback has a brevet number. Original cross-hatched crowns. The top crown rotates the internal bezel, which is in great shape in shiny black with silvered markers. The original superdome crystal is there, but has some crazing.
Dial: The dial on this Frey is very striking, in metallic silver with lumed wedge-shaped 5-minute markers, lumed Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9 and a powerful set of large, stylized broad arrow hands. The dial has some patina, but is very authentic and has lots of eye appeal.
Condition: 80% (8.0 of 10): very nice case, dial is good with some light wear/patina but nice, running well
